Meaning and Hope: A Salute to Robin Williams

A great Comedian and human being took his own life a few days ago.  Robin Williams could make me laugh like no other comedian.  His form of comedy was organic and spontaneous.  I still remember the first time I saw him acting on the Mork and Mindy television show.  I knew that I was watching a comedic genius.  It’s hard for most of us to understand how someone with fame, fortune and family cannot see life as worth living.  Being in a profession that works with mental health issues, I understand the illnesses of depression and addiction.  I also understand the feeling of despair than depression can lead us to because I’ve had a couple of times in my life that, for various reasons, I’ve experienced the dark hole of depression.

I was fortunate enough to find a way out.  I guess Mr. Williams couldn’t see that way out.  Sometimes we just have to keep looking for it.  Sometimes we have to persevere.  And when we can’t keep going we need to enlist the help of others to help us keep at it.  We need to keep looking for the right combination for us.  It might be counselling or maybe some medications are needed too.  Natural remedies can be helpful for some so a visit to a good homeopath might do it.  Change your diet.  Exercise.  Work at changing thought patterns.  Get involved in your community.  Do whatever it takes but don’t give up and don’t loose hope.  Hope is one of the essential elements in perseverance and happiness.  If we loose hope we can loose everything.  So hang on to whatever works for you and seek the help that you need.  I truly believe that we all have a purpose for being here.  Discover it and make life meaningful.

Unfortunately, for reasons we may never know, Robin Williams couldn’t keep going.  I wish he had.  I guess making others laugh wasn’t enough for him to have the meaning and purpose in life that he needed.  You will be missed Mr. Williams.  Let us learn from your life.
